Today we published a new report that explores how important the Helsingborg region for the Swedish and Nordic e-commerce sector. In it we find that the Helsingborg region is critically tied to approximately half of all e-commerce in Sweden, with 39–54% of Sweden’s total e-commerce having strong ties to the region. This is a market increase from the last report in 2023, when the number was around one third, and shows the region’s increasing status as one of the nation’s leading hub for digital commerce.

“Helsingborg combines a long tradition as a trading city with a strong culture of innovation and a strategic position as one of Sweden’s leading logistics hubs, making it a natural base for leading e-commerce players. E-commerce is a strategically important sector for us, driving growth, generating employment across multiple disciplines, and reinforcing Helsingborg’s position as a dynamic and competitive business region.” says Soraya Axelsson, Director of Business Development, City of Helsingborg.

The report underscores the region’s influence, innovative ecosystem, unique research and strategic importance to Sweden’s digital economy.

“The rapid development of e-commerce requires new ideas and collaboration models. At REAL, we work closely with businesses and society to create knowledge that drives the development of digital and sustainable commerce in the region.” says Daniel Hellström, Research Director at Lunds University.

The new report, based on the latest available public data, shows that e-commerce companies with operations in the Helsingborg region generated 54–76 billion SEK in revenue last year. This is driven by a combination of world-class logistics, a thriving community of entrepreneurs, a big growth in the number of tech people and a robust support network that enables businesses to scale both nationally and internationally.

The report also focuses on that the e-commerce ecosystem is diverse, with both international corporations such as IKEA, leading Nordic e-commerce companies such as Boozt but also lots of smaller e-commerce companies, such as nybryggt.nu, gents.se, fotbutiken.se, soulfactory.se and many more.

“At Nybryggt, we’re proud to be a part of the Helsingborg e-commerce cluster. It’s been an exciting journey for us, and the support from the region has truly helped us grow. There’s a lot of passion and collaboration here, which makes it easier for companies like ours to develop and reach new markets.” says Roosa Mannonen, who runs the e-commerce coffee store nybryggt.nu.

We are also proud that the Future Retail Incubator that we run is making important contributions to the growth of the region, with the companies who have gone thru it growing to over 600 million kronor in revenue last year.

But the report also mentions that the region is strong because of many of the specialist who are active here. From world class research with Lunds University’s Centre for Retail and Logistics to specialist companies such as Quickbutik, Contentor and HDL Commerce who work with both tech and AI for e-commerce purposes.

”We work every day with e-commerce companies looking to grow beyond their home markets. Being able to support them on that journey from Helsingborg, where we have close ties to our clients and a genuine international perspective, is something we find both natural and inspiring.” says Rabie Salem, CEO of Contentor.

The report also highlights how international the regions e-commerce companies are.

“Working with international clients requires an international mindset — something that is easy in Helsingborg, as just looking out of the office you see Denmark and all the international shipping companies operating thru this busy part of the world.” says Pierre Grönberg, Founder & CEO of HDL Commerce.
